ASTM A194 2H hex nuts are used for high temperatures and greater pressure, with sufficient strength and engineering to withstand extreme conditions. All standard heavy hex nuts are of the same shape and size as other grades, including double chamfered, hexagonal designs.
In some applications, 2H hex nuts can be used as an appropriate substitute to provide the required strength. The 2HM hexagon nuts are manufactured in a similar manner but provide a lower level of proof of load stress and hardness. Usually 2H of nuts can replace 2HM, although the converse may not be true.
DH grade hex nuts are formed from medium carbon steel materials and require heat treatment and quenching. Because a 2H hex nut is tempered in heat higher than other grades, i.e. C, DH and DH3, it can be considered stronger and used as a substitute. In structural applications, galvanized 2H hex nuts can be substituted for grade DH nuts, but these fasteners are marked with an asterisk plating-galvanized 2H hex nuts that are not applied to extreme temperatures or high pressure applications.
