WTO sources said on Tuesday that the European Union (EU) requested the World Trade Organization (WTO) to negotiate with the United States on Monday to discuss Washington’s move to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
"Although the United States has characterized these measures as safety measures, they are essentially safeguards," the EU said in its request.
Claiming that Washington had not notified the WTO Committee on Safeguards' decision to adopt safeguard measures, the European Union requested that it consult with the United States in accordance with the Safeguards Agreement, which stipulates the rules for implementing safeguard measures.
Despite widespread disagreement among business groups and trading partners around the world, US President Donald Trump signed an announcement on March 8 regarding a 25% tariff on imported steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum.
The 28-nation European Union temporarily exempted tariffs.
